High-Scoring Strategies for LSAT Logical Reasoning
The core of LSAT Logical Reasoning is determining what an argument is made of, which step is not adequately supported, and what the question asks you to do with it. Many students understand test preparation as learning dozens of "techniques," but a high score depends more on a stable analytical process. The first step is to identify the conclusion accurately. The conclusion is the claim the author wants the reader to accept, and the premises are the reasons used to support it. Some questions do not have an obvious "therefore"; instead, the conclusion may appear at the beginning or in the middle. Test takers can ask: What is the author really trying to prove? Why are the other sentences included here? If the conclusion is identified incorrectly, the rest of the analysis will usually go off track.
The second step is to distinguish background, evidence, and conclusion. Not every sentence in the stimulus necessarily plays a reasoning role. Some sentences only provide background, some present an opposing view, and some are the author's evidence. High-scoring test takers do not compress the whole passage into a vague impression, but instead clarify the relationship among its parts.
The third step is to look for the "logical gap." Most arguments move from existing facts to a conclusion that has not yet been fully proven. Common gaps include:
Treating correlation as causation;
Ignoring other possible causes;
Inferring a population from a sample;
Shifting between different concepts;
Mistaking a necessary condition for a sufficient condition;
Assuming that past trends must continue;
Using a proportional change to infer a change in absolute quantity.
Once the gap is identified, many question types become naturally clearer. Strengthen questions look for information that can fill the gap; weaken questions look for information that can widen the gap or provide an alternative explanation; necessary assumption questions look for a premise the argument cannot do without; sufficient assumption questions look for a condition that can guarantee the conclusion.
The fourth step is to make a reasonable prediction before looking at the answer choices. Prediction does not require writing out the exact credited answer; it means determining what task the answer must complete. For example, a weakening answer for a causal argument might provide reverse causation, a common cause, or a case in which the cause is absent but the effect is present. This reduces the chance of being attracted by answer choices that are elegantly worded but point in the wrong direction.
The fifth step is to understand the task in the question stem strictly. "Must be true" and "most strongly supported" require different levels of proof; "necessary assumption" and "sufficient assumption" also cannot be confused. After getting a question wrong, you should check whether you failed to understand the argument or misidentified the question type.
The sixth step is to use process of elimination to examine the answer choices. Common wrong answers include:
Relevant to the topic but not affecting the argument;
Using overly strong language;
Pointing in the opposite direction;
Changing the objects being compared;
Discussing an issue other than the conclusion;
Requiring additional facts to be true;
Merely repeating the stimulus without completing the task.
The seventh step is to control time. Easy questions should be completed quickly, leaving time for complex questions. When two answer choices are difficult to judge, you can return to what the question asks and ask which one has a more direct, necessary, or sufficient effect on the conclusion. Do not spend four or five minutes on one question and leave yourself without time for several later questions.
The eighth step is to build a high-quality error log. An error record cannot simply say "careless." It should note what the conclusion was, what the gap was, why your chosen answer was wrong, what task the correct answer completed, and how to recognize it next time. If you redo the same question after a few days and still cannot explain it independently, that means the knowledge has not yet been truly mastered.
Finally, official questions must be the core of preparation. Third-party questions can be used to understand concepts, but the precision of LSAT correct answers and the design of distractors are difficult to imitate fully.
